Past Simple

We use the past simple tense to talk about things that have already happened and the time is finished.
Habits in the past. 
 
A = Subj. + verb-ed (or 2nd column) + compl.
  E.g.: I went to the cinema.
  I played football.
N = Subj. + didn’t + verb + compl.
  E.g.: I didn’t go to the cinema.
  I didn’t play football.
I = Did + subj. + verb + compl.?
  E.g.: Did you go to the cinema?
  Did you play football?
 

Past Continuous
 We use the past continuous tense to talk about things that happened in the past but lasted some time. 

A = Subj. + was/were + verb-ing + compl.
  E.g.: I was studying English.
N = Subj. + wasn’t/weren’t + verb-ing + compl.
  E.g.: I wasn’t studying English.
I = Was/Were + subj. + Verb-ing + compl.?
  E.g.: Were you studying English?
